Type Locality and Naming
SUBSURFACE: Its type section is in Well SS-1, interval of 3884 to 4502 m. [Original Publication: Zutshi, P.L., Mittal, S.K., and Shah, L., 1993: Lithostratigraphy of Indian Petroliferous Basins, Document IV, Kutch Saurashtra Basin, KDMIPE, ONGC Publication, pp 1-50.]. Reference well: Well OS-2-G-1, interval of 1648 to 1883 m.

Lithology and Thickness
In Saurashtra Basin, it consists of alternating sequence of limestone/shale with few quartzite sandstone layers in lower parts. In OS-2-G-1 its thickness is 165 m, and increase towards Diu Arch. NDRDGH.gov Mumbai stratigraphic chart indicates claystone. Raju's chart had as marl.

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Overlies the Deccan Traps Fm volcanics / Laterities
Upper contact
Disconformity (upper Ypresian-lower Lutetian), overlain by Belapur Fm; or disconformity continues upward to base of Pipavav Fm or Diu Fm.
Regional extent
Saurashtra Basin and the Diu Block of northern Mumbai basin.

N. burdigaliensis- Lokhartia hunti occurs in the upper part. The lower part of the formation is poorly fossiliferous.
